The 4Cs of Diamonds: A No-Nonsense Guide
Every diamond is graded on four characteristics. Here is what actually matters.
Cut: The Only One That Really Matters
Cut determines how much a diamond sparkles. A well-cut diamond reflects light internally and back out the top. A poorly cut diamond leaks light and looks dull. Always prioritize cut.
Color: Less Important Than You Think
Graded D (colorless) to Z (yellow). Most people cannot tell D from G with the naked eye. Our recommendation: G to I range. Near-colorless, looks white in any setting, costs much less than D-F.
Clarity: Almost Irrelevant in Most Jewelry
Anything VS2 or better is eye-clean, meaning you will never see inclusions without a loupe. Paying for Flawless in a bracelet you wear daily is paying for something invisible.
Carat: Size, Not Quality
Just weight. A 2-carat diamond with poor cut looks worse than 1.5 carats with excellent cut. Sweet spots: 0.9 and 1.9 carats (nearly identical to round numbers, significantly cheaper).
